Tax refunds for doctors

Tax back on your professional fees, for doctors at every stage

Many doctors pay for their GMC registration, BMA membership, Royal College fees, indemnity cover and exams themselves, and never claim the tax relief they're entitled to. We'll check what you can claim, and for how many years.

Who this is for

  • Resident doctors in foundation and specialty training
  • Salaried and partner GPs
  • Consultants
  • Locum doctors
  • Doctors with private practice income
  • Dentists and other healthcare professionals with professional fees

What we can help with

Fees you may be able to claim for

GMC registration

Your annual GMC fee, where you paid it yourself.

BMA membership

Part of your BMA subscription can qualify for relief.

Royal College fees

Membership and some exam fees, depending on your training and specialty.

Medical indemnity

Indemnity or defence organisation fees you've paid personally.

Other professional costs

Other subscriptions on HMRC's list, and some work travel between sites. We'll check what applies.

Wider tax help for doctors

Self Assessment for doctors

Returns for doctors with locum work, private practice or other income, with your professional fees claimed through the return.

Specialist medical tax

Some areas, such as NHS pension tax charges, need a specialist medical accountant. If that's what you need, we'll introduce you to one we trust.

Things to know

How it works

  1. Send an enquiry

Tell us your grade, whether you file Self Assessment, and which fees you've paid.

  2. We check your claim

Paul checks what you can claim, for which years, and lets you know honestly if it's worth doing.

  3. We handle it with HMRC

We make the claim the right way for you, either with a claim form or through your tax return.

We may introduce some enquiries to partner firms and may receive a fee for doing so. We'll always tell you before we pass on your details.

What you'll usually need

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Receipts, invoices or bank statements for the fees you paid
  • Which years you paid them in
  • Whether you already file a Self Assessment tax return

Common questions

I'm a resident doctor. Can I claim?

Very often, yes. GMC, BMA, Royal College and indemnity fees you paid yourself can usually be claimed. Some exam fees depend on your training pathway, so we'll check.

How many years back can I go?

HMRC generally allows claims for the current tax year and the previous four tax years.

I work as a locum. Is it different?

Usually, yes. If you're self-employed for your locum work, costs are normally claimed through your Self Assessment return. We can help with that too.

Can you help with NHS pension tax?

NHS pension tax is a specialist area. If you need help with it, we'll introduce you to a specialist medical accountant, and tell you upfront if we receive a fee for doing so.

Can I claim for my commute to the hospital?

No. Travel between home and your normal place of work isn't allowed, but some travel between different work sites can be.
