Business tax reliefs

R&D tax relief and capital allowances, claimed properly

If your company is developing something new, or investing in equipment, vehicles or property, there may be tax reliefs available. We'll help you understand whether you qualify and make sure any claim stands up.

Who this is for

  • Limited companies developing new or improved products, processes or software
  • Engineering, manufacturing, technology and food businesses
  • Businesses buying equipment, machinery or vehicles
  • Businesses buying, building or fitting out commercial property
  • Companies that have claimed before and want a second opinion

What we can help with

R&D tax relief

Checking if your work qualifies

R&D, for tax purposes, means work that tries to make an advance in science or technology by solving uncertainties that a competent professional couldn't easily resolve. It's often broader than people expect, but narrower than some adverts suggest.

Preparing a claim

Working out the qualifying costs, preparing the technical explanation HMRC needs, and filing it with your company tax return.

Meeting HMRC's newer requirements

The rules changed in recent years, including a merged scheme for most companies from April 2024 and new forms HMRC requires before and with a claim. We'll make sure nothing is missed.

Capital allowances

Equipment, machinery and vehicles

Making sure your business gets the right allowances when it invests in plant, machinery and business vehicles.

Commercial property

Claiming allowances on qualifying fixtures within commercial property you buy, build or fit out.

Reviewing past claims

Checking whether allowances have been missed in earlier years.

Things to know

How it works

  1. Send an enquiry

Tell us what your company does and what you're looking at: R&D, capital allowances, or both.

  2. An initial review

Paul looks at whether you're likely to qualify and what a claim would involve.

  3. The right team takes it on

We handle the claim ourselves, or introduce you to a trusted specialist where that's the better option for you.

We may introduce some enquiries to partner firms and may receive a fee for doing so. We'll always tell you before we pass on your details.

Common questions

Does software development count as R&D?

It can, if it's trying to resolve genuine technological uncertainty, rather than building something with existing, well-known methods. We'll help you work out which projects might qualify.

My company made a loss. Can we still claim R&D relief?

Loss-making companies can still benefit in some cases. How depends on your circumstances and the current rules, so we'll check.

Can a sole trader claim R&D relief?

No. R&D tax relief is only for limited companies. Sole traders and partnerships can still claim capital allowances on qualifying spending.

What are capital allowances?

They're how businesses get tax relief on certain things they buy and keep using in the business, like equipment, machinery, vans and some fixtures in buildings.

We already had an R&D claim done by another firm. Can you check it?

Yes. If you're unsure about a previous claim, it's worth getting a second opinion, especially if HMRC has been in touch.
